HBO’s The Last of Us TV series will arrive in January, according to a release date leak. People on Twitter noticed that the show’s landing page in the HBO Max app reveals a January 15, 2023 release date for the show. The show was previously only confirmed to debut sometime in 2023.
GameSpot and VGC verified this as well. A source told VGC the date is real and was likely posted by accident. The source said HBO will officially announce the release date this week.
The Last of Us TV series follows the events of the first game, taking place 20 years after civilization has been decimated by a virus. Joel (Pedro Pascal) is hired to sneak Ellie (Bella Ramsey) out of a quarantine zone and to safety. “What starts as a small job soon becomes a brutal, heartbreaking journey, as they both must traverse the U.S. and depend on each other for survival,” HBO said.
In addition to Pascal and Ramsey, the show stars Gabriel Luna as Tommy, Murray Bartlett as Frank, and Nick Offerman as Bill. Storm Reid plays Riley. The show also features a star of the original game, Merle Dandridge, reprising her role as Marlene.
Craig Mazin, who wrote The Hangover sequels and Chernobyl, is writing The Last of Us TV show alongside Neil Druckmann from game developer Naughty Dog. Mazin also wrote the upcoming Borderlands movie.
As for the Last of Us game franchise, a new standalone multiplayer game is in the works and it might be a free-to-play title.
