Call Of Duty: MW2 Family Sharing Disabled On Steam, And Players Aren’t Happy
Family sharing for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 on Steam has been disabled a few days after the game launched.
According to a report from Kotaku, Modern Warfare 2 released on October 28 with this feature enabled. A listing on SteamDB stats the feature was turned off on Halloween, preventing some players who had access to the game from playing further.
For the unfamiliar, family sharing is a Steam feature that lets family and friends have access to games on your account. Any account can share a game with up to five other accounts, but there are some restrictions. The digital copy is essentially shared between accounts, so two players cannot play at the same time on different PCs. The feature is activated at the discretion of the game publisher and there is an option to turn it off or on in the Steam backend.
Activision has yet to make an official comment, but users have speculated that family sharing can enable cheaters to avoid bans. Regardless, members of the Call of Duty community are generally unhappy with the change, citing the high price tag of the game and the desire to let other members of their household or family play without buying a second copy.
Modern Warfare II has been selling quite well however, hitting $800 million in revenue in just three days. The GameSpot review of Modern Warfare 2’s campaign gave it an 8/10. Reviewer S.E. Doster said that, “Fresh new mechanics, more flexibility in how you complete missions, and a host of callbacks to the original series make Modern Warfare 2’s campaign feel satisfying.” The GameSpot review of Modern Warfare’s multiplayer granted it a 7/10, with S.E. Doster saying, “Gameplay really feels like a refreshing return to old times again for Call of Duty, but unfortunately, the package as a whole feels lacking and gun customization is overly complex.”
