David Tennant Surprised As 14th Doctor, Will Be Joined By Catherine Tate
Jodie Whittaker, the 13th Doctor in the long-running sci-fi show Doctor Who, ended her time with the show as part of this week’s season finale. Though instead of Sex Education star Ncuti Gatwa, who had previously been announced as the new Doctor, fans got a surprisingly familiar face.
David Tennant, who famously played the 10th Doctor, has now become the 14th Doctor. The BBC reported that both Tennant and Catherine Tate are reprising their roles for the show’s 60th anniversary. It’s also been confirmed that they will appear in three special episodes, airing November 2023.
Gatwa will take control of the Tardis after Tennant, with his first episode airing over the holidays in 2023, as part of the Who celebration.
“David Tennant, previously known as the 10th Doctor, is now also known as the 14th Doctor. Confused? Don’t worry, he seems a little perplexed too,” the BBC said in a statement.
“You move on from it with a whole mixture of emotions,” Tennant told the BBC. “I thought it was something that I would certainly never be as involved in again… it’s like being given the loveliest present. And I’m very, very excited. I’m thrilled and I hope people will enjoy the stories we’ve got to tell.”
Showrunner Russell T. Davies promised similar shocks with the series and the stories actually leading up to Gatwa taking up the role. “The path to Ncuti’s 15th Doctor is laden with mystery, horror, robots, puppets, danger, and fun,” he said in a press release (via Variety). “And how is it connected to the return of the wonderful Donna Noble? How, what, why? We’re giving you a year to speculate, and then all hell lets loose.”
