Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3 Gets Emotional First Trailer
Marvel has released the first trailer for the final film in James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy. Volume 3 hits theaters on May 5, 2023–and based on the trailer, it looks like the movie will explore Rocket Raccoon’s origins and the return of Zoe Saldaña’s character Gamora.
The trailer also gives our first look at the Chukwudi Iwuji’s High Evolutionary as the main villain, and MCU newcomer Will Poulter as Adam Warlock–an all-powerful artificial being created to destroy the Guardians. We also see the return of Chris Pratt as Star-Lord, Dave Bautista as Drax the Destroyer, Vin Diesel as Groot, Karen Gillan as Nebula, Pom Klementieff as Mantis, Sean Gunn as Kraglin, and Elizabeth Debicki as Ayesha. Borat 2 star Maria Balakova plays Cosmo the Space Dog.
This trailer made its debut at Comic-Con in July, but both Gunn and Marvel mutually decided while it was ready for an IRL showing, it wasn’t quite up to snuff to post online. The filmmaker explained on Twitter that the trailer’s VFX aren’t ready for “repeated views and close inspection.” Clearly, it’s ready for primetime now.
It’s been five years since Guardians 2–something the trailer makes mention of right out of the gate, with Star-Lord saying, “We were gone for quite a while.” However, several of the film’s characters have made appearances in other Marvel films since, and as a group appeared in Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special and Taika Waititi’s Thor: Love and Thunder.
Earlier this year, Gunn announced that Guardians 3 will wrap the trilogy and be his last film with the franchise and cast.
