Things are again moved around in the now ever-shifting world of Warner Bros. Discovery as Greg Berlanti’s longtime in-development Green Lantern series at HBO will now be redeveloped. Originally set to focus on two Green Lanterns, Alan Scott and Guy Gardner, played respectively by Jeremy Irvine and Finn Wittrock, The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that the series will now shine an emerald spotlight on fan-favorite John Stewart.

Sources told THR that Stewart, who grew into prominence in the early 1970s and was featured in the Justice League animated series, was originally off the table. Former DC film spearheader Zack Snyder once had his own plans for the character with actor Wayne T. Carr suiting up in the role. Stewart was also recently featured in his own animated movie, voiced by Aldis Hodge, who can now be seen as Hawkman in Black Adam.

As part of this overhaul, showrunner Seth Grahame-Smith has now departed the series. He had completed scripts for a full season of eight episodes and chose to leave the project after the constant number of regime changes at HBO Max.

With former DC Film president Walter Hamada’s exit and the rebranding of DC Studios, a decision was made to start over and build the show around Stewart. When HBO Max announced plans for Green Lantern in October 2019, Berlanti described it at the time as the “biggest DC show ever made.”

In the comics, John Stewart is a US Marine veteran and engineer who gets his ring as part of being a substitute for Hal Jordan’s backup, the aforementioned Guy Gardner, who is injured. He becomes a longstanding member of the Green Lantern Corps. as well as many incarnations of the Justice League.
