Joker 2 Not In New DC Universe, Batman 2 Still Years Away

It sounds like Joker: Folie à Deux won’t be a part of any connected DC film universe the newly instated James Gunn might oversee.

Yesterday, October 25, it was announced that Gunn would co-lead DC Studios alongside Peter Safran, which will include things like DCEU movies, shows, and cartoons. However, the sequel to the 2019 box office hit Joker will exist outside of that, according to the report from Variety announcing the news.

It’s unclear how involved either Gunn or Safran might be in the Joker sequel, the former obviously being a notable director himself, having worked on all three Guardians of the Galaxy films for Marvel, and last year’s The Suicide Squad for DC. Variety noted that one producer questioned if Todd Philips, Joker’s director, will want to work with Gunn, though others with knowledge of the studio say this is where Safran comes into the equation.

In addition, it also sounds like we won’t see a sequel to this year’s The Batman until at least 2025. Variety reports that writer-director Matt Reeves hasn’t actually handed in a finished script yet. A sequel was supposedly confirmed earlier this year, though a later report suggested it hadn’t actually been greenlit yet. Though this could have been because of Warner Bros. and Discovery’s merger this year, as Variety’s report does make it sound like a sequel is expected.

Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav had been looking for a Kevin Feige-type figure to lead a DCEU, as the company’s attempts up to this point haven’t found as much success as its rival company Marvel.

Explaining his choice to have Gunn and Safran head up DC Studios, Zaslav said, “Their decades of experience in filmmaking, close ties to the creative community, and proven track record thrilling superhero fans around the globe make them uniquely qualified to develop a long-term strategy across film, TV, and animation, and take this iconic franchise to the next level of creative storytelling.”
