Knives Out 3: Rian Johnson And Daniel Craig To “Dig Deeper Into The Genre” To Keep Series Fresh
Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery is about halfway through its abbreviated week-long theatrical run before coming to Netflix on December 23, and already writer-director Rian Johnson and star Daniel Craig are talking about the final film in the trilogy. Both spoke with Deadline as the movie was headed to roughly 700 theaters nationwide.
Although neither are giving away any plot details yet–and it sounds like nothing is set, anyway–both Craig and Johnson spoke of a shared commitment to the series remaining a fun, twisting, and ensemble-packed franchise. Johnson further said that to prepare for the movie and find inspiration, he will be “digging deeper into the genre and see if there’s any hidden gems I’m missing.” Part of that is because he wants to keep viewers on their toes and also, Johnson said, because people are always asking him to recommend five whodunnits, and “it’s going to be very frustrating by the third movie to be naming the same five over and over again.”
Although there is only a deal in place with Netflix to turn Knives Out into a trilogy, Craig said “if people are interested, then we’ll [continue] to make them. But if there ever came a point where either Rian and I thought we were just churning them out, I think we would back away.” Johnson added that as a director, he feels it’s really important to see what he can do to make his experience “scary and dangerous” to “shake the box” and prevent getting complacent. “I’ve become much more confident over the years,” Johnson said. “But that comes with its own set of dangers–you’ll settle into a routine–and I’m especially conscious of that now that I’m making a series.”
As of this writing, Knives Out 2 has an aggregate score of 82 and 93, respectively, from the handful of critics who have seen it so far. The film’s ensemble includes a returning Daniel Craig as master detective Benoit Blanc, joined by newcomers Edward Norton, Janelle Monáe, Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr., Jessica Henwick, Madelyn Cline, Kate Hudson, and Dave Bautista. It looks truly nutty and like a great time–Norton plays a colorful tech billionaire named Miles Bron. Bron invites his friends for a getaway on his private Greek island–but when someone turns up dead, Craig’s Detective Benoit Blanc is put on the case.
Johnson is also working on an hour-long mystery series for Peacock titled Poker Face, starring Natasha Lyonne (Russian Doll, Orange is the New Black).
