New Hercules Movie Factors In How Audiences Are “Trained By TikTok” These Days
Disney’s new live-action Hercules movie will factor in how audiences are nowadays “trained by TikTok.” Producer Joe Russo (Avengers) told Variety that the film will be “a little bit more experimental in tone,” and that includes being shaped by how young people in particular are “trained” by TikTok these days.
The Russo brothers are producing the film via their AGBO banner, with Guy Ritchie (Disney’s Aladdin) set to direct. Joe Russo said Ritchie is perfect for the movie because he has a “penchant for experimentation.” Russo went on to say that he believes Disney is excited about the project because it will be more than a simple “reinterpretation of the animated film” from 1997.
The new live-action Hercules will be a musical, and this is where the TikTok inspiration comes in.
“Audiences today have been trained by TikTok, right? What is their expectation of what that musical looks like and feels like? That can be a lot of fun and help us push the boundaries a little bit on how you execute a modern musical,” he said.
Anthony Russo told Collider that he and his brother are “Hercules fanatics.” When they caught wind that Disney was interested in making a live-action film, they made the case to executives that they were the right partners to produce it. “And here we are,” Anthony Russo said.
Their new live-action Hercules will not be a “literal translation” of the animated movie. They are keen to bring “something new to the table” with the movie.
“We’re going to give you a different story. I think we’ll do something that’s in the vein of the original and inspired by it, but we also bring some new elements to the table,” Anthony Russo said.
Hercules is just the latest classic Disney animated movie to be made into a live-action film. Other upcoming projects include Snow White featuring Rachel Zegler and The Little Mermaid featuring Halle Bailey as Ariel.
There is no word yet on a cast or release date for the new Hercules film.
